Responsibilities

Responsibilities of a West Berkshire Councillor

West Berkshire Council is a unitary authority of 43 councillors elected every four years. Each councillor's normal responsibilities include:

  • Representing the ward — Acting as the link between local residents and businesses and the council, and ensuring the ward gets fair consideration and funding.

  • Casework — Helping individual constituents with issues such as housing, social care, waste collection and planning, and signposting them to the right service.

  • Council meetings — Attending and voting at full Council, where the budget and major policies are agreed.

  • Committee work — Sitting on committees such as planning and licensing to decide on local applications.

  • Scrutiny — Holding the council's leadership to account and checking that decisions are sound and offer value for money.

  • Community leadership — Staying informed about issues across the ward and representing the views of all sections of the community.

  • Standards and conduct — Following the council's code of conduct and declaring any relevant interests.

  • Public engagement — Being accessible to residents through surgeries and meetings, and supporting them to ask questions or present petitions.
